Silky Smooth Skin Maintenance: Why You May Need Periodic Laser Hair Removal Touch-Up Treatments
Laser hair removal sounds like a great idea, but you’ve heard that you may need touch-up sessions. If so, why and how often? Here’s the truth about laser hair removal and why it’s still your best bet for long-lasting, smooth skin.

All you want is long-lasting, silky, smooth skin. Is that too much to ask? Even the most advanced laser hair removal systems may require a few touch-ups — here’s why.

Laser hair removal is the way to go if you’re looking for long-lasting, silky, smooth skin forever. However, even the best treatments may require you to return for a touch-up now and then.

To help you achieve the best results, Jenine Referente, FNP-C, and Kayla Posada, CLT, at North Texas Med360 in Frisco, Texas, use the advanced Lutronic® Clarity II hair removal system. However, we understand you may wonder, “Is laser hair removal permanent?” and “Will I need touch-ups?”

Here, we explain how the Lutronic Clarity II works, why hair regrowth could occur, and how periodic touch-up treatments can help maintain your smooth skin.

The way Lutronic Clarity II laser hair removal system works

The Lutronic Clarity II system is a state-of-the-art laser platform that targets and reduces unwanted hair. It uses a dual-wavelength laser that zeroes in on the pigment in your hair follicles. This energy heats and damages the follicles, significantly reducing or preventing future hair growth.

The Lutronic Clarity II has an edge over traditional laser systems because it’s faster and more precise. Its built-in temperature and advanced skin-cooling technology make it much safer and more comfortable, whether treating large areas like your back or smaller zones like your upper lip.

While this technology is remarkably advanced, it’s essential to understand that laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee total and permanent hair removal.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is a long-lasting solution to unwanted hair, but it’s technically not “permanent.” Even though the process can destroy many hair follicles during a session, it’s not likely to get every hair follicle. Hair growth cycles play a significant role here.

Hair grows in three stages:

  1. Anagen (growth phase):  When hair is in this phase, lasers are most effective
  2. Catagen (transitional phase): Hair becomes detached from the follicle
  3. Telogen (resting phase): No hair growth makes it harder to target with laser treatment

Because not all your hair is in the same growth phase during your treatment, you have to come back for multiple sessions to zap all your follicles. Even so, the treatment may only damage some follicles instead of destroying them, which accounts for hair regrowth.

Why might hair regrow after laser hair removal?

There are a few reasons your hair might grow back even after completing a series of laser hair removal treatments.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal shifts, such as fluctuations due to menopause, pregnancy, or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can stimulate dormant hair follicles to grow hair again.

Incomplete follicle destruction

As we mentioned, not all follicles get destroyed during a session. Some may only be damaged, leading to finer and less noticeable regrowth.

Hair texture and color

Lasers are most effective on darker, thicker hair. Finer or lighter hairs might not respond as well and could regrow.

Natural body changes

Over time, changes in your body’s hair growth patterns can also contribute to some regrowth, especially in areas prone to hormonal hair growth, such as the face or bikini area.

How often do I need laser hair removal touch-up treatments?

The frequency of touch-up sessions depends on your body, the area treated, and how your hair responds to initial treatments. Most patients enjoy smooth skin for a year or more but may require maintenance sessions every 6-12 months to tackle regrowth.
